Overstrand Municipality’s Baboon Management Plan for Pringle Bay

29 April 2024

Overstrand Municipality(OM) shared their Baboon Management Plan for Pringle Bay with the Ward 10 Committee members today.

The plan addresses the specific issues faced in the PB environment.

The overall strategy is to keep the baboons out of the Village as far as possible and, over time, encourage the PB troop to spend more time in the Rooiels Conservancy and possibly, in the future, into Buffelstal too.

The Plan will use a selection of tools to achieve their objectives. We are pleased to learn that the training of the Eco Monitors is already taking place and is being done with both OM Law Enforcement, the NSPCA and CapeNature.

The OM Operations Manager stressed that OM recognises that this is an adaptive strategy and will be evaluating this on an ongoing basis.

The date of implementation will be determined by the Eco Rangers achieving the necessary level of competence in animal behavioural management and use of management tools. This is expected to be in May.

The PBRA welcomes the imminent implementation of the Baboon Management plan and supports OM in launching its plan.
