Beach Rescue Event

16 September 2024

Over the past several months, members of the Pringle Bay Ratepayers Association (PBRA) Beach Rescue group have dedicated their efforts to nurturing seedlings collected from local sources. This past Saturday, 14 September 2024, marked a significant milestone as part of the group planted these seedlings onto the back dunes, aligning with the Beach Management Plan aimed at preserving the coastal ecosystem. Meanwhile, other volunteers contributed by dragging branches to the foredune, which plays a crucial role in stabilizing and building the dune structure.

The following day, light rains blessed the area, providing much-needed moisture that will help these newly planted seedlings thrive. The hope is that they will develop into robust plants that naturally mitigate sand erosion along our beach. The team’s efforts have already yielded visible results, with substantial amounts of beach sand being retained instead of being lost to inland areas.

In addition to their hard work, the team enjoyed a well-deserved coffee break featuring biscuits and Cornel’s renowned sausage rolls. The group extends its heartfelt thanks to Cornel of Chas Everitt for his generous sponsorship, which arrives at a time when it is especially appreciated.

For those interested in participating in these rewarding activities that contribute to beach preservation while fostering community connections, the PBRA Beach Rescue group meets on the second Saturday of each month. Interested individuals can reach out to Carel Laubscher, the group convenor, at 079 524 4334 to get involved.

This initiative not only helps protect our beautiful beach but also offers a chance to meet new friends and enjoy fulfilling outdoor experiences.
